Privacy notice

What this notice covers

It covers CoinsCanada.com. It does not cover any other site you reach from a link here. Following a link to the Royal Canadian Mint, to the Bank of Canada or to eBay takes you to an organisation with its own privacy policy, and that policy governs what happens there.

Every page on this site is generated once, when the site is built from the dataset described on the methodology page, and then served identically to everybody. Nothing on a page is assembled for you in particular, and the one thing that is genuinely live, the silver price, is a single cached figure served to every reader at once.

What is collected

Four things, and this is all of them.

• Server and network logs. The hosting provider and the content delivery network that serve these files keep standard request records: the URL requested, a timestamp, the IP address making the request and the browser’s user agent string. Every web server keeps these, and they exist so the service can be operated and abuse can be handled.
• Analytics. This site uses Google Analytics 4 to count visits and see which coins people actually look up. It sets a first-party cookie and reports a page path, an approximate location worked out from your IP address, and your browser and device type. Two settings are switched off deliberately rather than left at their defaults. Google signals is what would let Google join a visit here to its cross-site advertising identity for you, and ad personalization signals is what would let the data feed ad targeting. Both are disabled, so this stays first-party measurement. Any content blocker stops it, and nothing on this site depends on analytics working: the melt calculator, the specifications and every figure work identically either way.
• An email address, if you give one. If you join the list, the address you type and the fact that you subscribed are stored with the mailing list provider. Nothing else is asked for. Every email carries an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing removes you from the list.
• What you write in the contact form. The contact form collects your email address, which is needed to reply, and optionally your name, a subject line and your message. If you arrived at the form from another page on this site, that page is recorded with the message so a correction can be matched to what it refers to.

There is no account, no login, no search box that sends anything to a server, and no field anywhere on this site asking about your finances, your holdings or your household.

What it is used for

The information above is used to:

• operate, secure, maintain and improve the site;
• measure how the site is used, including which pages are read and which sources send readers here;
• send the newsletter and other email to people who asked to receive it;
• answer messages sent through the contact form and keep a record of corrections;
• support advertising, sponsorship and affiliate arrangements, including measuring whether they work;
• pass an enquiry to a relevant partner where you have asked to be put in touch with one;
• produce aggregate or de-identified statistics, which may be published or shared without restriction because they identify nobody; and
• comply with the law and enforce the terms of use.

Marketing email goes only to people who asked for it. Signing up is the only route onto that list, and an address sent through the contact form is not added to it.

Who it goes to

Information is shared with the service providers that make the site work, each of which processes it on our instructions:

• the hosting provider and content delivery network that serve the pages and hold the request logs;
• Google Analytics, for the measurement described above;
• Brevo, which stores the mailing list and sends the email;
• SendGrid, which delivers messages from the contact form to us.

Information may also be disclosed where the law requires it, to a professional adviser, or to a buyer or successor if the site or the business operating it changes hands. Aggregate or de-identified figures may be shared or published freely.

As of the date on this page, no personal information is sold, none is shared for cross-context behavioural advertising as the California statute defines that term, and no advertising network is loaded on this site.

What leaves your browser

Three things beyond the analytics described above.

A price request. Pages showing a live metal value ask this site’s own server for the current silver price when they load. That request goes to this domain, carries no identifier, and returns the same cached figure to everybody.

Fonts. Typefaces are served from this site’s own domain rather than from a font provider, so loading a page does not tell a third party that you did.

eBay, but only if you click. Links to eBay carry a parameter identifying this site so that a commission can be attributed. Following one takes you to eBay, where eBay’s own privacy policy applies and this site has no visibility into what you do. If you do not click, nothing is sent to eBay. Disclosures.

Cookies

One, set by Google Analytics, described above. eBay may set cookies once you are on eBay, which is a matter between you and eBay. As of the date on this page there is no advertising cookie on this site.

How long it is kept

• Server and network logs: for the period set by the hosting provider and the content delivery network, which is a matter of months rather than years.
• Analytics: for the data retention period configured on the Google Analytics property.
• An email address on the list: until you unsubscribe or ask for it to be deleted, plus the short period the mailing list provider needs to record the unsubscribe so you are not added again.
• A contact form message: for as long as it is useful for answering it and for keeping a record of a correction, and then deleted on request.

No valuations, no photographs

This site publishes no collector or catalogue values. Canadian retail values are the work of the Charlton catalogue and of the grading services, this site holds no licence to them, and it does not generate figures that look like them. The reasoning is set out in full.

That has a privacy consequence worth stating here rather than leaving implied. Because there is no valuation service, there is no reason for this site to hold a photograph of your coins, an inventory of what you own, or your address. The contact form asks you not to send any of it, and there is no field that invites it.

Your rights

To make a request, write to privacy@coinscanada.com, or use the contact form. We answer to the address the request comes from, and we do not require an account or any other identifier to make one.

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to know what personal information is held about you and to obtain a copy of it, to have it corrected, to have it deleted, to receive it in a portable form, to opt out of its sale, of its sharing for cross-context behavioural advertising and of targeted advertising, to opt out of profiling that produces legal or similarly significant effects, and not to be treated differently for exercising any of them. These rights are given by the California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia and Texas privacy statutes, among others. Readers in Canada have comparable rights of access and correction under Canadian federal privacy law.

Because the site holds so little, most requests resolve quickly: there is often nothing to export, nothing to correct and nothing to delete beyond an address on the mailing list or a message you sent. If a request is refused, you may appeal by replying to that decision, and the appeal will be reconsidered and answered. Residents of some states may also complain to their state Attorney General, and readers in Canada may complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.

Global Privacy Control signals are honoured.

Children

This site is a general-audience reference work and is not directed at children under 13. Personal information is not knowingly collected from them, and the mailing list is not for them. If we learn that we hold information from a child under 13, it is deleted. A parent or guardian who believes a child has sent something through the form can ask for it to be removed through the contact form.

Security

The site is served over HTTPS. Credentials for the mailing list and the mail provider are held as server-side environment variables and are not present in anything sent to your browser. Access to the mailboxes and provider accounts is limited to the people who operate the site.

No system is perfectly secure, and no assurance is given that a transmission over the internet cannot be intercepted. The strongest protection here is structural: a site that holds very little has very little to lose.

Where data is processed

This site is about Canadian coinage and it is operated from and hosted in the United States. The providers named above process information in the United States and in other countries where they operate. If you are reading from Canada or from anywhere else outside the United States, using the site involves transferring your information to the United States, where data protection law differs from the law where you live.

Changes to this notice

This notice may be updated as the site changes. The date at the top of the page is the date of the current version, and a material change is dated here when it is made. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the updated notice.

Reader measurement was added on 4 September 2026. The mailing list and the contact form were added on 6 September 2026, and the same rewrite removed a set of statements about what this site would do in future, because the first of them was already out of date.
